DRIPS- DIVIDEND (OR DIRECT) REINVESTMENT PLANS
Next to the basic understanding that if you follow the InvestingForStudents.org Program for a long period of time that you will become a multimillionaire DRIP investor, the second major contribution to the small investor with limited funds to invest (often $10 to $100+), and limited investment knowledge, is the introduction to and the participation in the fascinating world of DRIPS. For all practical purposes early in your career, with limited funds it is not a bad idea to do all of your stock investing through DRIPS. Enroll your children in Custodial DRIP Accounts. Fund them regularly with small amounts of money. Let them put their money into their coffee cans. Let them send the money into their DRIPS. Get them into the lifelong hobby/habit of becoming systematic regular savers and knowledgable multimillionaire DRIP investors when they are as young as possible.
Almost all major listed companies have DRIPS, Coca-Cola, IBM, Microsoft, Walmart, etc., (at the end of this section - Understanding DRIPS - is a list of all major companies offering DRIPS), and this is how they work. Purchase one share of stock of that company and you are eligible to belong to their DRIP.

To enroll in a DRIP at the $20 registered member of InvestingForStudents.org fee (rather than the standard $40 fee), click on HOW TO BUY A DRIP AT A STUDENT DISCOUNT. |
www.directinvesting.com specializes in getting people into DRIPS. With this firm you do not have to open an account with $1,000 to $5,000 before you can participate, there is just a one time brokerage fee of $20 (If you are a registered member of investing for students.org or a standard fee of $40 if you are not a registered member of InvestingForStudents.org. Smart registered members will put this $20 saved into their coffee can. This $20 saved per DRIP enrollment is sufficient reason for everybody to register for free in InvestingForStudents.org. To register, link on to FREE REGISTRATION FOR STUDENTS), plus the cost of the stock, usually between $20 to $80 to get that one share of stock to get into the DRIP
. Thus assume Coca Cola is selling for around $45 a share, for a cost of $65, you are in. Once you are registered in the DRIP,
and unfortunately this can take as long as 1 to 3 months, a small down side to getting into DRIPS, and have your own Coca Cola DRIP account with Coca Cola, you can then send money directly to Coca Cola for deposit into your Coca Cola DRIP account for shares or fractions of shares of Coca Cola stock. THERE ARE NO COMMISSION CHARGES FOR THAT STOCK. You never pay another commission for any other share of Coca Cola stock that you buy through your DRIP
Coca Cola account. You can purchase as little as $10 worth of stock as regularly or as irregularly as you want. Purchasing more then $10 at a time is better, but they will accept as little as $10 (for about 1/4 share of stock) at a time and there is no commission charge. You can also choose to have your dividends directly converted to Coca Cola stock and placed in your DRIP
account, also without a commission charge. You can also choose to have the dividends mailed to you, but the smart thing to do is redeposit them back into your DRIP
account. After several years by sending in small sums of money and reinvesting your dividends compound interest will kick in and you will have a substantial accumulation of Coca Cola stock. Notice that this is all done with small amounts of money that students can afford, literally $1+ into a coffee can.
The next intelligent thing to do is build your own PERSONAL MINI MUTUAL FUND. You do this simply, gradually over several months to years, by joining 10 to 30 DRIPS. Your commission will be $20 per DRIP if you are a registered member of InvestingForStudents.org or $40 per DRIP if you are not a registered member of InvestingForStudents.org. Then you are commission free for the rest of your life. Say after a month of funding your coffee can with $1+ a day, tithing your income, money saved by 50% to 100% frugal savings, and 50% of windfall money, you have $135 in your coffee can. You can buy $10 of Coca Cola, $25 of Johnson & Johnson, $50 Walmart, and $50 of Microsoft. After a few years you will have a growing portfolio of quality diversified stocks, purchased commission free with small money, compounding for you 24 hours a day 7 days a week eventually transforming you into a multimillionaire DRIP investor. Sounds good to me.
As with all investments before you get into them you should know as much as possible about them. The book THE MONEY PAPER'S GUIDE TO DIRECT INVESTMENT PLANS - available through www.directinvesting.com or call toll free 1-800-388-9993 will give you an immense amount of practical information about DRIP investing and is an essential addition to the personal library of any serious DRIP investor.
Remember it can take 1 to 3 months to process the paper work, but as long as you are regularly funding your Coffee Can Savings PlanSM, and are in the program for life, who cares? All companies have slightly different rules. Most require a purchase of 1 share. Some require 3 to 5 shares. Some a minimum purchase of $10, some $25, some $50, some $100. Some charge a $1 to $5 dollar transaction fee.
Do not get me wrong. I am not anti-stock broker. Brokers play a very important roll in investing and can be a wealth of information and superb advise. However if you do not have the $1,000 to $5,000 to open a brokerage account, and you know what you are doing because knowledgeable DRIP investing is your hobby/habit, DRIPS are a great way to go.
A nice thing about DRIP investing, especially relative to teaching students / participants about investing, is that it is real knowledgable long term investing dollar for dollar with real money. There is no gambling. There is no day trading. There is no margin investing. There is no short selling. There are no options. There are no-you get you first 30 trades free in 60 days. There are no commissions. There are no penny stocks. There is no account churning. DRIPS are basically dollar for dollar long term investing, commission free, with affordable amounts of money ($10, $25, $50+) that student's funding a coffee can can even afford to lose. DRIP investing encourages lifelong saving and investment in quality stocks with automatic reinvestment of dividends (also commission free). It is hard to get much better than that.
A PRACTICAL DRIP
EXAMPLE
Let's assume that you have saved up $300 in your Coffee Can. Let's assume that you want to get into 5 DRIPS each stock costing $40 per share. That is $200 worth of stock and at $20 commission per share that is $100 in commissions or a total of $300 to get you into 5 DRIPS. Realize that $100 commission to purchase $200 worth of stock is no bargain, however now you are in 5 DRIPS with 5 excellent companies. Let's assume that you save $50 a week in your Coffee Can Savings PlanSM and because your DRIPS are so good you get a 10%, 12%, or a 14% return on your money. After 40 years at 10% you will have $1,161,438; at 12%. you will have $2,020,359; and at 14% you will have $3,549,575. In 65 years at 10%. you will have $12,839,545; at 12%. you will have $34,682,902; and at 14% you will have $94,401,430. Not bad for a $100 commission.
Also remember that young students can have an 80 to 90+ year longetivity. The numbers can get mind boggling.
A small but important note: DRIPS charge no commission to deposit money into the DRIP. Some DRIPS charge a small transaction fee of 1 to 5 dollars. On small deposits of from 10 to 50 dollars this small transaction fee can add up. The book, The Guide to Direct Investing, will tell you if your DRIP has a transaction fee and how much that fee is. Some DRIPS will charge a small transaction fee for reinvesting dividends. The book, The Guide to Direct Investing, will tell you which DRIPS charge that fee. The web site www.directinvesting.com will also let you know which DRIPS are totally free and which DRIPS charge small fees. The Guide to Direct Investing can be purchased through www.directinvesting.com or by calling toll free 1-800 388-9993.
An important thing to remember is your primary goal in DRIP investing is to pick DRIPS (stocks) which will go up substantially in value and not worry about the negative impact of small transaction fees.
